Samsung Electronics has launched digital signage using bio-based materials. Samsung Electronics said on Thursday it will roll out the 13-inch A4-size "Samsung Color E-Paper" globally in phases. It expanded the lineup following a 32-inch model introduced last year. Samsung Color E-Paper is an ultra-low-power display that uses digital ink technology and consumes no power when maintaining an image shown on the screen.
The new 13-inch product has 1,600x1,200 resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio. It is 8.6 mm thick at its thinnest point. It weighs 0.9 kg including the battery. It comes with a rechargeable detachable battery, a stand and a ceiling-mount bracket. It can be hung on a wall or ceiling rail wire or installed as a tabletop display.
The new display uses a bio resin based on plant-derived plankton oil. The material uses plant-derived plankton, which directly absorbs carbon dioxide in the resin production process, as a raw ingredient. The company said the manufacturing process can cut carbon emissions by more than 40 percent compared with conventional petroleum-based plastic materials. It said UL, a global certification body, verified that the product cover includes more than half bio resin and recycled plastic.
Samsung Color E-Paper uses a "color imaging algorithm" that provides visibility. It also supports a dedicated mobile app for running content playlists or controlling the device. It can also be managed in an integrated way with existing signage through Samsung Electronics' signage content management solution, Samsung VXT. Samsung VXT provides content image quality optimisation and a preview function that allows users to check the actual on-screen colour of content in advance.
Kim Hyung-jae (김형재), a vice president in Samsung Electronics' Visual Display Business, said, "To minimise the impact on the environment, we developed plant-based plankton bio resin and applied it to products for the first time in the industry." He added, "Through technological innovation such as new Color E-Paper products that can replace paper and the development of new materials, we will take the lead in opening up new markets."
Samsung Electronics also plans to unveil for the first time a 20-inch Samsung Color E-Paper in A3 paper size at ISE 2026, Europe's largest commercial display exhibition, to be held in Barcelona, Spain, in February.
