[DigitalToday reporter Hyunwoo Choo] DJI, a global leader in civilian drones and creative camera technology, said on Thursday it will launch a new lightweight commercial camera gimbal, the DJI RS 5.

The RS 5 features improved intelligent subject tracking and stabilisation performance, as well as extended battery efficiency, to boost usability in one-person video production environments.

The RS 5 applies an RS enhanced intelligent tracking module, allowing users to select and track a subject directly on the gimbal touchscreen. It recognises people as well as vehicles, pets and objects, and maintains stable tracking from distances of up to 10 metres. It can automatically re-identify a subject even if it leaves the frame, and its magnetic mounting enables a range of shooting setups without additional accessories.

With a fifth-generation RS stabilisation algorithm, maximum motor torque is improved by 50 percent from the previous version. It can secure stable footage while walking or running and during sudden camera movements, and vertical shooting stability has also been strengthened. The weight, including the battery grip and quick-release plate, is 1.46 kg, and it supports a payload of up to 3 kg.

The RS 5 supports distinctive shooting angles through an electronic briefcase handle and guides a shooter’s walking pattern through a Z-axis indicator. It takes about 1 hour to fully charge and can be used for up to 14 hours with the standard battery. Operating time extends to up to 30 hours when using the high-capacity battery grip. The Bluetooth shutter expanded support to Panasonic and Fujifilm cameras, following Sony, Canon and Nikon.

The DJI RS 5 will be available for purchase in two options from Jan. 30 through official distributors and the DJI online store.

The DJI RS 5 standalone model will sell for 654,000 won and includes 1 each of the gimbal body, a quick-open tripod, a lens fixation support, a screw kit, a top quick-release plate, a bottom quick-release plate, a BG33 battery grip and a multi-camera control cable. The DJI RS 5 Combo is priced at 823,000 won and adds an RS enhanced intelligent track module, an electronic briefcase handle, an L-type cable and a carrying case to the standalone package.
