Google has expanded features in its Google Maps app so pedestrians and cyclists can use the Gemini AI assistant, TechCrunch reported on Jan. 29.

Google Maps users can now ask Gemini questions while walking, such as "Tell me about this neighborhood" and "What are must-see attractions nearby?" Cyclists can ask questions such as "When is the estimated arrival time?" and "What time is my next meeting?" They can also give commands such as "Text Emily that I'll be 10 minutes late."

With this update, users can also continue multiple questions in a conversational format. They can ask consecutive questions such as "Is there an inexpensive restaurant with vegetarian options along the route?" and "How is parking there?"

The feature is now available globally on iOS and will be introduced to Android in phases. Google has recently added a Gemini-based "pre-trip check" feature to the Google Maps app, strengthening AI navigation by providing advance guidance on how to make reservations, hidden menu items and suitable parking locations.
