South Korea's National Assembly Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, led by the Democratic Party, voted on Jan. 29 to file complaints against former Korea Communications Commission chair Lee Jin-sook (이진숙), TV Home Shopping Association head Lee Sang-rok (이상록) and Eugene Group Chairman Kyung-sun Yoo (유경선) over alleged perjury and absence at last year's parliamentary audit.

The committee held a full meeting at the National Assembly and decided to file complaints against a total of 6 people, including the three, as well as Eugene Corp CEO Seok-hoon Yoo (유석훈), YTN policy office chief Hyun-woo Kim (김현우) and former YTN HR team head Cheol-min Jung (정철민). Lee is accused of perjury, while Lee Sang-rok faces allegations of absence and perjury. The other four are accused of absence.

Lee previously claimed that Rep. Choi Min-hee (최민희) asked during the same year's audit for her wedding invitation and requested that congratulatory wreaths be sent, in connection with Choi's daughter holding a wedding ceremony at the National Assembly during last year's audit period. The committee viewed the claim as untrue and applied an alleged perjury charge.

People Power Party members on the committee opposed the complaints. Choi Hyung-doo (최형두), the opposition floor spokesperson, said filing complaints while an investigation is under way is a political act and harsh, adding that the People Power Party does not agree with any of the complaints to be filed on the day.

The committee also approved a Coupang-related complaint. It decided to file a complaint against Jae-geol Lee (이재걸), vice president in charge of legal affairs at Coupang, on allegations of perjury at joint hearings on Dec. 30 and 31 last year over the Coupang personal data leak incident.

At the hearings, the vice president said in relation to Coupang's internal investigation into the personal data leak incident, "The National Intelligence Service strongly demanded, 'We cannot directly meet the suspect and retrieve it ourselves, so a Coupang employee must go to China together to meet the suspect and receive it.'" He spoke to the effect that the agency asked Coupang to retrieve the suspect's laptop.

The National Intelligence Service countered at the time in a press release, saying it made no instructions, orders or approvals to Coupang beyond requesting materials.

Earlier, the committee filed complaints against 7 current and former Coupang executives, including Coupang Inc Chairman Bom Suk Kim (김범석) and interim chief executive Harold Rogers (해롤드 로저스), on suspicion of violating a law governing testimony and appraisal in the National Assembly.

At the full meeting, the committee also approved a motion to recommend 3 people as members of the Broadcasting, Media and Communications Deliberation Committee: former Sejong City Audience Media Center director Mi-ae Hong (홍미애), former Korea Communications Standards Commission member Jong-sang Koo (구종상) and former Gyeongnam MBC chief executive Il-gon Kim (김일곤).
