Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix earnings helped lift the KOSPI above 5,200 for the first time on record.
As of 9:15 a.m. on Jan. 29, the KOSPI is up 49.43 points, or 0.96 percent, from the previous session at 5,220.24. The index opened at 5,243.42, breaking above 5,200 for the first time.
By investor type, retail investors are net buyers of 742.2 billion won. Institutions and foreign investors are net sellers of 476.6 billion won and 265.1 billion won, respectively.
Top KOSPI market-cap shares are mostly higher. Samsung Electronics is up more than 1 percent and SK Hynix is up more than 3 percent. Both hit fresh 52-week highs during the session. SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics posted fourth-quarter earnings for last year that were tallied at a record-high level.
Hyundai Motor is also up 4.57 percent, with Doosan Enerbility up 2.39 percent and Naver up 0.90 percent.
In contrast, LG Energy Solution is down 2.67 percent, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is down 1.88 percent, Celltrion is down 1.83 percent, Hanwha Aerospace is down 0.85 percent and Samsung Biologics is down 0.89 percent.
The KOSDAQ is up 30.61 points, or 2.7 percent, from the previous session at 1,164.13. The index is also holding gains after opening at 1,153.43.
