[DigitalToday reporter Chi-gyu Hwang] Snap has established a subsidiary called Specs dedicated to developing augmented reality (AR) glasses, as it seeks to accelerate commercialisation of next-generation AR glasses.
CNBC reported on Jan. 28 that Snap aims to improve operating efficiency for its AR glasses through Specs and is keeping open the possibility of securing outside partners and attracting investment.
Snap has signalled since last year that it would set up a separate entity to develop AR glasses. Specs is hiring more than 100 people. It plans to launch sixth-generation AR glasses in 2026. CNBC reported that the new product will be smaller and lighter than existing models and will target general consumers.
Meta and Google are also moving in earnest into the AR glasses market. Meta has worked with eyewear company EssilorLuxottica to launch AR glasses priced at $799, and Google plans to unveil a product developed with Warby Parker later this year.
