Google has unveiled a feature in AI Overviews that lets users switch directly to AI Mode to support conversational search, TechCrunch reported on Jan. 27.
AI Overviews is an AI summary feature shown at the top of Google Search. When users ask follow-up questions, it switches to AI Mode so they can continue a deeper conversation.
Google is applying Gemini 3 as the default model for AI Overviews and is changing search from a static experience into an AI-driven conversational platform, TechCrunch reported.
Robbie Stein (로비 스타인), a vice president for Google Search products, said, "Users should be able to have a natural conversation with AI about complex questions, not just search for simple information."
Internal testing at Google showed that switching from AI Overviews to a conversational flow increased user satisfaction.
The update was announced days after Google added a "personal intelligence" feature to AI Mode. Personal intelligence uses Gmail and Google Photos to provide personalized answers and was designed to enable tailored responses in the Gemini app as well. Google also introduced a feature that applies AI Overviews to Gmail, allowing users to search emails in natural language and quickly find answers.
