The monthly payment cap for online web board games will increase to 1,000,000 won from 700,000 won. The government decided to ease the regulation after gathering views from academia and the industry as the regulatory sunset deadline approached.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said on Jan. 27 that a revision to the enforcement decree of the Game Industry Promotion Act passed a Cabinet meeting. With the revision, the monthly purchase limit per person for web board games that simulate betting and payouts, including hwatu, poker and sports outcome prediction, was raised to 1,000,000 won.

Under the previous enforcement decree, a user was limited to buying up to 700,000 won worth of game money and items in a month. The regulation was introduced in 2013 and was eased once in 2022, to 700,000 won from 500,000 won.

The cap increase was 추진됐다 as the sunset deadline for the provision approached Jan. 1 this year. The ministry has reviewed since late last year a plan to raise the payment cap to 1,000,000 won, and finalised the revision after collecting views from the game industry and academia during the process.
