Samsung Electronics said on Monday it has added MILIPASS, a mobile identification card for military personnel and their families, to Samsung Wallet. MILIPASS is a mobile identity authentication platform operated by the Korea Special Information Certification Authority for Army, Navy and Marine Corps service members and their families, and is currently used by about 1.1 million people.
Samsung Electronics has provided national IDs such as resident registration cards and driver’s licences, as well as student IDs, through Samsung Wallet. Samsung Wallet MILIPASS does not store personal information on servers and applies Samsung Electronics’ Knox security solution. It has built a thorough security process from issuance to use so it can be used safely.
The addition will provide special benefits. Existing Samsung Wallet users can take part in a Samsung Wallet points giveaway promotion if they issue MILIPASS after a software update.
It also offers free subscription vouchers for about 220,000 reading contents including e-books, audiobooks and web novels from reading platform Welaa, as well as free subscription trials and discount benefits for magazines worldwide from digital magazine service Moazine. Military personnel can use digital content during leave or leisure time. Samsung Electronics also plans to simplify the sign-up process for its special discount welfare mall for soldiers, the Samsung Electronics Family Mall.
Samsung Wallet MILIPASS allows users to verify their identity easily and receive benefits without additional supporting documents when using military marts as well as military welfare and sports facilities. Identity verification is also available at external convenience facilities that offer military discounts. It simplified identity verification procedures that military personnel previously had to go through.
Lee Young-gyeol (이영결), CEO of the Korea Special Information Certification Authority, said, "We will continue working so MILIPASS can be used more conveniently in Samsung Wallet, the country’s leading mobile wallet service."
Chae Won-cheol (채원철), head of the Digital Wallet Team at Samsung Electronics’ MX Business division and a vice president, said, "This service is expected to accelerate the digital transformation of military life and significantly improve convenience in daily life, and Samsung Electronics plans to continue expanding services that strengthen convenience and security for military life."
