The Broadcast Media Telecommunications Commission is expected to begin normal operations three months after its launch.

Choi Min-hee (최민희), chair of the National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee and a lawmaker from the Democratic Party, said at a New Year gathering of broadcast media and telecommunications professionals at the Conrad hotel in Yeouido on Friday, "We confirmed a standing member today." She said non-standing members are awaiting a final decision by party leadership, adding that early next week the committee plans to finalise the commission's non-standing members and the Broadcast Media Review Committee members at the parliamentary level.

Ko Min-su has been designated as the opposition-nominated standing member. Once appointments of non-standing members are completed, the commission will be set up as a seven-member body, exceeding the quorum for resolutions of 4. Until now, it has operated with only 2 members recommended by the president and has faced disruption.

At the event hosted by 20 associations and groups including the Korea Broadcasters Association, the association's president, Bang Moon-shin, cited copyright protection, AX support and regulatory improvements as three key tasks for the AI era. "If a system for protecting and compensating AI training content is not put in place, the media ecosystem will collapse," he said, stressing the need to abolish asymmetric regulations on terrestrial broadcasters.

Kim Jong-cheol, chair of the Broadcast Media Telecommunications Commission, said, "We will overhaul the outdated framework of the analogue era and asymmetric regulations so that AI and digital technologies permeate across the industry."
