South Korea's KOSPI regained the 5,000 level early on Jan. 23 but pared gains to close in the 4,990s. The Kosdaq jumped more than 2 percent to near 1,000, dubbed the "1,000 Kosdaq."
The KOSPI ended up 37.54 points, or 0.76 percent, at 4,990.07. It extended its record closing high set a day earlier.
The index opened up 31.55 points, or 0.64 percent, at 4,984.08 and widened gains. It rose as high as 5,021.13, setting a record intraday level.
Gains later narrowed as profit-taking emerged.
The KOSPI rose above 5,000 for the first time ever early in the previous session but pared gains to finish in the 4,950s. It again failed to settle above 5,000 on a closing basis on Jan. 23.
The Kosdaq ended up 23.58 points, or 2.43 percent, at 993.93, its highest since Jan. 7, 2022, when it stood at 995.16. That was the highest level in more than 4 years.
