KakaoBank said on Thursday it will strengthen financial crime prevention technology by using AI and a telecom authentication solution to protect customer assets from increasingly sophisticated voice phishing and other non-face-to-face financial fraud.

KakaoBank introduced the SurPASS telecom authentication solution and selfie verification to upgrade its response to voice phishing.

SurPASS is a telecom authentication solution developed to strengthen prevention of non-face-to-face financial fraud. It is provided through a partnership between mobile carriers and Korea Credit Bureau (KCB). It helps a financial institution's fraud detection system determine whether a transaction involves identity theft or is linked to voice phishing.

It will also apply AI voice-phishing victim detection technology using telecom AI. The service analyzes customers' call patterns through telecom AI to calculate a voice-phishing risk rating. If customers assessed as high risk use KakaoBank, its voice-phishing fraud detection system will further review whether the transaction is legitimate.

As it expands the use of its fraud detection system, it also introduced selfie verification into the system. Selfie verification uses AI to compare a customer's selfie with an ID card to confirm identity. It has been applied to account opening and OTP use, strengthening the safety of various financial services.

KakaoBank said it has further strengthened its fraud detection system by actively using AI to prevent voice phishing. It added it will continue to work to create a safe financial environment that customers can use with confidence.
