As debate continues over revenue models for generative artificial intelligence (AI) services, a newly released demo is drawing attention for letting users experience what an ad-funded chatbot might look like.

Gigazine, an online outlet, reported on March 3 that OpenAI recently disclosed plans to introduce ads in ChatGPT, while Anthropic is maintaining its position that it will not attach ads to Claude. Perplexity AI has also pivoted to gradually scaling back and withdrawing ads it once introduced. The dispute pits the argument that ad revenue is needed to offer AI services for free given massive computing costs against concerns that ads could harm user experience.

Against that backdrop, AI agent provider 99helpers released an "Ad-Supported AI Chat Demo." The experimental service is designed to let users experience what a chatbot environment filled with ads would look like in practice.

In the center of the demo screen is a chatbot called "AdBot AI," with 2 ads at the top, 2 on the right and 1 at the bottom displayed by default. Under the chatbot name is the phrase "Completely free" (including 47 ads), and guidance such as "5 ads remaining" also appears at the top of the screen. A warning in the middle says, "This AI may recommend products at any time," and banner-style ad copy is inserted above and below the prompt input box.

When a user enters a question, ads appear repeatedly not only before and after the answer is generated but also during the waiting time as the response is being produced. In effect, the entire conversation process is structured to proceed alongside ads.

99helpers explained the demo by saying, "As chatbots become mainstream services, companies have faced the fundamental challenge of having to keep free users while bearing massive infrastructure costs," adding that "advertising is one of the answers." It added, "This demo is an educational tool that contains all major advertising patterns applicable to AI interfaces, and was made to help marketers, product managers and developers understand AI monetisation models and gauge a future users can accept."

As AI services become more widely used and an "ad-supported free model" emerges as a realistic alternative, how the industry balances user experience and profitability is becoming a core challenge.
