Apple is developing a circular AI wearable called the Pin, about the size of an AirTag, and is targeting a 2027 launch. It plans to produce 20 million units, The Information reported on Tuesday, citing multiple sources.

The project is at an early stage, but Apple is accelerating it with competition from rivals' AI devices such as OpenAI and Meta Platforms in mind, The Information said.

The Pin is a thin, circular disc made of aluminium and glass. It is expected to include two cameras on the front, including a standard lens and a wide-angle lens, enabling photos and video recording of the surrounding environment. It will also include 3 microphones to capture nearby sound, a speaker, a physical button on the side, and an inductive wireless charging interface similar to the Apple Watch.

It is being designed to be similar in size to the AirTag but slightly thicker.

It is unclear whether it will be bundled with other products such as smart glasses or future AirPods. It has a physical button, microphone and speaker that allow standalone interaction, raising the possibility it could be used in conjunction with more powerful devices such as an iPhone. Consumers may have to buy separate accessories to attach it to a bag or clothing.

Apple is also known to be developing various AI devices, including AirPods with enhanced AI features, security cameras, smart glasses, augmented reality (AR) glasses and small-display-based home products.
