[Digital Today reporter Hyunwoo Choo] Apple unveiled 2 new Mac monitor models on March 4. They are the new Studio Display, aimed at both general and professional demand, and the Studio Display XDR, its top-end monitor for professionals. Pre-orders for both start on March 4, with an official release on March 11.
■ New Studio Display - enhanced camera and connectivity
The upgraded Studio Display keeps its 68.3 cm (27-inch) 5K Retina display, while substantially strengthening key features. The most noticeable change is a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera and support for Desk View. Desk View shows both a top-down view of the user’s desk and the user at the same time, and can be used for video calls or creative project demonstrations.
On connectivity, it is upgraded from Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 5. Two Thunderbolt 5 ports enable high-speed accessory connections or daisy-chaining of up to 4 units, and it also supports up to 96W charging for fast charging of the 14-inch MacBook Pro. The 6-speaker sound system has also been improved, delivering 30 percent deeper bass than the previous generation. Prices start at 2,499,000 won.
■ Studio Display XDR sets new pro display standard with mini LED
The all-new Studio Display XDR replaces the existing Pro Display XDR and is a concentration of Apple’s XDR display technology. The key is a mini LED backlight. With 2,304 local dimming zones, it delivers up to 2,000 nits peak brightness in HDR and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Brightness is substantially improved versus the existing Studio Display (600 nits).
For color reproduction, it adds support for the Adobe RGB color space in addition to the P3 wide color gamut, allowing printing and design professionals to use both color spaces at the same time without switching settings. For HDR video editing and color grading, it covers more than 80 percent of the Rec. 2020 color space.
Another key feature is a 120Hz refresh rate and adaptive sync. It supports a variable refresh rate between 47 and 120Hz, dynamically adjusting the display to match frame rates for video playback and graphics-intensive games. The camera and audio system and Thunderbolt 5 connectivity are the same as the Studio Display, and the base stand includes a tilt- and height-adjustable stand with height adjustment across a 105 mm range. It supports up to 140W charging for fast charging of the 16-inch MacBook Pro. Prices start at 5,199,000 won.
