[DigitalToday reporter Chi-gyu Hwang] Google has unveiled an “Express Pay” feature through a major Pixel Watch update that enables payments without opening the Wallet app, The Verge reported on March 3 (local time).
The feature applies starting with the Pixel Watch 2 and operates similarly to Apple Watch “Express Mode”. Users must activate the feature, and payments are available after unlocking the device. Previously, Pixel Watch users had to press the device crown twice to launch the Wallet app, but the update streamlines that process.
After supporting payments for transit services, the Pixel Watch will expand to retail payments through this update.
Integration features with Pixel phones have also been strengthened. The auto-lock feature, available from the Pixel Watch 2, locks the smartphone when the user moves beyond a certain distance and uses notifications to indicate whether the device has been left unattended. It is supported on Pixel 8 and later models, and a rapid PIN entry system will also be introduced to enhance security. This is available only on the Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel 8 Pro and later, excluding the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8A.
In addition, the update adds the Find Hub feature to the original Pixel Watch and other Wear OS devices, and introduces a new one-handed gesture on the Pixel Watch 3. The Pixel Watch 4 Satellite SOS feature will expand to Europe, Canada, Hawaii and Alaska, among other locations.
