Naver Webtoon said on Tuesday that its English original webtoon "Lore Olympus" will be produced as an animated series for Prime Video.
The series will be produced for Prime Video and is set to be released exclusively in more than 240 regions worldwide.
"Lore Olympus" was discovered by Naver Webtoon on its overseas amateur platform Canvas. The webtoon has logged more than 1.8 billion cumulative global views. It has won praise for its distinctive artwork telling the story of Hades and Persephone from Greek and Roman mythology.
Recognised for its artistic quality, it swept both the Eisner Awards and the Harvey Awards, three major U.S. comics awards, in 2022. At the Eisner Awards, often called the comics industry's Academy Awards, it set a record by winning best webcomic for three consecutive years through 2024.
Production will be jointly handled by the U.S. production company The Jim Henson Company and Webtoon Productions, a unit under Naver Webtoon's U.S. headquarters. The project is expected to be The Jim Henson Company's first adult animation.
Naver Webtoon entered the U.S. market in 2014 and has built a local creator ecosystem. In addition to "Lore Olympus," projects to adapt various works for the screen, including "Love Advice from the Great Duke of Hell," are under way.
Melissa Wolfe (멜리사 울프), head of animation at Amazon MGM Studios, said she was glad to present "Lore Olympus" to Prime Video viewers around the world. She said she expects it to become an exciting new title through cooperation with Webtoon Productions and The Jim Henson Company.
