Satya Nadella (사티아 나델라), Microsoft CEO, stressed that energy costs will be a key factor in the AI race.
CNBC reported on Monday that Nadella said at the World Economic Forum, "AI use is directly linked to economic growth, and countries that can secure energy cheaply will take an advantageous position in the AI race."
Nadella referred to the AI processing unit known as a "token" as a new global commodity and predicted that countries that secure tokens cheaply will lead economic growth. Big Tech companies such as Microsoft are already investing huge sums to build AI data centres.
Nadella warned, "If tokens produced using scarce resources such as energy do not deliver tangible results in the health, education, public and private sectors, we will also lose social permission." He said Europe is at a disadvantage in the competition for AI infrastructure as energy costs have surged since the Russia-Ukraine war. Nadella stressed that what matters in the AI race is not simply energy production but total cost of ownership, including data centre construction and silicon costs.
