LG Uplus said on Jan. 20 it developed a "Network Open API Platform (Open API Gateway)" with telecom equipment maker Ariatech.

A network open API is a technology that standardises a carrier's network functions and provides them so outside developers or companies can use them. Major telecom operators worldwide are moving in earnest to commercialise network open API technology.

Network open APIs are delivered externally through a channel called a "network open API platform". From an outside developer's perspective, the platform makes it easy to adopt a carrier's verified functions in API form.

LG Uplus' network open API platform provides APIs that strengthen personal data and financial security, including handset number authentication, SIM change information, handset location information, handset status information and device change information. It also offers "QoD (Quality On Demand)", which raises communications quality at a time users want, as an API.

Outside developers can improve financial services through LG Uplus' network open API platform. Banks can compare a customer's mobile phone location information when the customer withdraws cash at an ATM to verify identity and prevent financial incidents. They can also strengthen security services, such as checking whether a cloned SIM is being used during identity verification.

LG Uplus worked with Ariatech, a South Korean small and medium-sized company, to develop the network open API platform. Earlier, LG Uplus signed an agreement in 2024 with South Korean mobile carriers to cooperate on developing standard open APIs and, working with the Korea Information and Communication Technology Association, a standards-setting body, established domestic API standards.

Lee Sang-heon, head of advanced development at LG Uplus, said, "Through the development of this network open API platform, we have laid the groundwork to develop innovative services that can provide new customer value." He added, "We will strive to secure the core future network technologies customers need so we can help create a bright and sustainable world."
