Signal co-founder Moxie Marlinspike has released a privacy-focused AI service called Confer, TechCrunch reported on Jan. 18.

Confer works like ChatGPT or Claude, but it does not collect user data or use it for advertising. Marlinspike warned that chatbots tend to collect private user information and that using it for advertising could create a dangerous situation akin to a therapist working for advertisers.

To address this, Confer encrypts messages and processes all inference tasks in a trusted execution environment (TEE). It verifies through a remote attestation system that the server has not been tampered with. Marlinspike said this minimizes the possibility of user data being leaked to outside parties.

Confer allows 20 messages a day and only 5 active chats on its free version, while unlimited use is available for $35 a month.
