Amazon Web Services (AWS) will officially launch a Europe-tailored "sovereign cloud" in Germany, CNBC reported on Wednesday. A sovereign cloud stores and processes data only within a specific region and restricts outside access.

CNBC said the move is a strategic step to maintain the dominance of U.S. technology companies as data protection regulations tighten in Europe.

AWS is building the sovereign cloud in Brandenburg, Germany. It has put in place physical and logical barriers to prevent data from moving outside the European Union.

The AWS European sovereign cloud is designed to minimise reliance on non-EU infrastructure so it can operate independently even if communications are cut. AWS plans to invest 7.8 billion euros (9.6 trillion won) in the sovereign cloud in Germany by 2040 and expand it to Belgium, the Netherlands and Portugal.
