Anthropic has renamed the most expensive personal plan for its AI assistant Claude to "Ultra" and removed the five-hour usage cap for verified accounts.

Japan's ITmedia reported on Sunday that the $200-a-month "Max 20x" plan was renamed "Ultra" and the $100-a-month "Max 5x" plan was renamed "Max".

Prices remain unchanged. Existing subscribers will be moved automatically to the new plans without additional steps. The adjustment goes beyond a name change and focuses on revising the actual usage conditions for upper-tier plans.

Ultra removes the usage ceiling that applied every five hours for accounts that have completed verification. Anthropic began applying the change from the same day to most existing subscribers. Newer accounts will temporarily keep limits until account verification is completed to prevent misuse.

The verification method is separate from phone-number verification conducted at purchase. It is determined automatically based on account history and payment history, and users are notified by email when limits are lifted. A help page specifies that verification is complete if the "current session" bar does not appear in the usage screen under settings.

Weekly usage caps remain. Pricing information says the $100-a-month Max plan provides about five times the usage of the $20-a-month Pro plan on both a five-hour basis and a weekly basis. Ultra provides 10 times Pro's usage on a weekly basis.

The previous "Max 20x" multiple and the new Ultra multiple are not based on the same 기준. The earlier 20 times referred to five-hour usage, while the current 10 times is based on weekly usage. The change may look like a reduction based on the number alone, but the comparison basis differs, making a direct comparison difficult.

Both plans can use the high-performance model "Fable" for up to 50 percent of the weekly cap. They also provide monthly API credits that can be used on the Claude platform for developers. The amounts are $100 per month for Max and $200 per month for Ultra.

Claude's Max plan was first introduced on April 9, 2025. From then, it was offered as two tiers with higher usage than Pro. The $100-a-month tier was offered as "Expanded Usage" and the $200-a-month tier as "Maximum Flexibility," and they have been distinguished on the pricing page and in the app as "Max 5x" and "Max 20x," respectively.

With the overhaul, Anthropic simplified its personal paid plans to Max and Ultra and adjusted the lineup to reduce short-term usage constraints for higher-tier users. Limits remain for new accounts until verification is completed, and weekly caps also remain, meaning perceived usage is expected to vary depending on account status and usage patterns.
