Electric vehicle adoption is expanding rapidly in Australia, with an average of one EV sold every 100 seconds in the first half of this year. The market has grown to the point that one in four new cars is sold as an EV, but expanding charging infrastructure and electrifying commercial vehicles remain challenges.

CleanTechnica recently cited the Electric Vehicle Council's (EVC) "2026 Electric Vehicle Status Report" as saying EV sales in the first half of this year rose 117 percent from a year earlier to 157,957 units. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 103,716 units and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) for 54,241, a ratio of about 2 to 1. Their combined share of total new-car sales rose to 25.8 percent from 12.1 percent in the first half of last year.

The range of EV choices also expanded. The number of EV models sold in Australia increased to 196 this year from 153 last year. As of the end of June, about 612,000 EVs were on the road.

Charging infrastructure is also growing quickly. The number of public charging sites nationwide increased 235 percent from a year earlier to 4,268, and charging connectors rose 175 percent to 11,602. Still, rising demand for charging as EV adoption expands and the possibility of introducing road-use charges were cited as uncertainties for growth.

The pace of transition varied by vehicle type. In the first half of this year, 32 percent of new bus sales were BEVs, but the market share of electric vans and trucks each remained below 1 percent.

Julie Delvecchio (줄리 델베키오), EVC chief executive officer, described the commercial vehicle market as a key opportunity to expand electrification. Australia currently sells 16 electric van models and 30 electric truck models.

Policy uncertainty remains. The Australian government operates new-vehicle efficiency standards, but some opposition parties are calling for easing regulations. Tax benefits related to EVs are also being phased down.

The EVC stressed that to deploy 5 million BEVs by 2035, the pace of transition must be accelerated further.
