Google and Oracle have announced a partnership to provide Google’s TPU AI chips to Oracle Cloud customers, The Information reported on Oct. 27.

It is the first time Google has offered TPUs on a cloud platform outside its own.

Oracle plans to introduce TPUs to its public cloud service, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), by 2027, the report said.

Google developed TPUs more than 10 years ago and has recently accelerated efforts to expand the TPU ecosystem. It began selling TPUs to outside companies, including neo-cloud firms, from this year.

Amin Vahdat (아민 바닷), senior vice president and chief technology officer for Google AI infrastructure, said providing TPUs on Oracle Cloud would let more organisations use them. He said it would also make it more flexible to build and run the most complex AI applications.

The Information said more cases are emerging of Google working with companies that compete with it in the cloud market, such as Oracle, to expand TPU adoption.

Google last week decided to offer OpenAI models that compete with its Gemini to Google Cloud customers.
