Seven Anthropic co-founders have pledged not to put advertising in the AI chatbot Claude, The Information reported on Oct. 26 local time.
The report said the founders disclosed the pledge in a letter attached to the IPO securities filing released that day. They stressed that the only reason Claude exists is to give people helpful answers.
“Once advertising becomes part of the company’s revenue targets, pressure inevitably increases to drive user engagement,” the founders said. “We will ensure Claude is not swayed by that kind of pressure,” they added.
OpenAI, unlike Anthropic, started as a consumer chatbot and shows ads to free ChatGPT users. OpenAI sees advertising becoming a major revenue source over the next few years.
Anthropic does not run an advertising business, but it is already a major advertiser itself.
According to the filing, Anthropic’s marketing and advertising expenses rose by $170 million in 2025 from the previous year and increased by $273 million in the first half of 2026. The company said it increased spending on advertising placements with media outlets to support product launches.
