Toss will run a promotion through the end of this year that rewards 20 percent of payment amounts to encourage wider use of its facial recognition payment service FacePay.

Viva Republica, the operator of Toss, said on Oct. 26 it will expand payment benefits for FacePay users.

FacePay is a service that lets users pay using facial recognition without taking out a separate wallet or mobile phone. It has 9 million subscribers as of this month.

The 20 percent rewards promotion applies to first-time FacePay users or existing customers who meet certain conditions. Users can check whether they are eligible in the FacePay benefits screen within the Toss app.

Eligible customers can earn 20 percent rewards on FacePay payments for 30 days from the day they join the promotion. There is no limit on the number of uses, with benefits capped at 2,000 won a day and 60,000 won over 30 days.

It also offers merchant-specific benefits. At GS25, users can earn 30 percent rewards up to 2,000 won a day. At CU, users can get a 40 percent discount, capped at 4,000 won, when buying ready-to-eat meals from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Youngpoong Bookstore and Pizza Hut also offer discounts or rewards depending on usage conditions.

The 20 percent rewards promotion and merchant-specific benefits cannot be applied together. If a customer meets both conditions, the more favorable benefit applies.

A Toss official said, "FacePay is spreading a new payment experience in everyday life," and added, "We hope users can enjoy both FacePay's convenience and tangible benefits in a variety of payment situations."
