Bitcoin ran into sell orders around $83,000 and slipped below $82,000.
On Oct. 19 local time, Cointelegraph reported that U.S. and Asian stock markets rebounded, but bitcoin failed to move in the same direction and remained in a limited range.
Bitcoin climbed as high as $83,062 during the session but then fell. It briefly slid to $81,678. After the U.S. stock market opened, it failed to extend a rebound, showing decoupling from equities.
In stock markets, selling pressure in technology shares eased and major indexes rebounded. South Korea's KOSPI closed up 1.76 percent at 5,768 points, and the Nasdaq Composite was up 1.5 percent as of that day. Bitcoin, however, failed to gain momentum despite the broader rebound in risk assets.
U.S. Treasury yields rose along with stocks. Markets were ahead of earnings announcements from Meta, SpaceX and Tesla. The yields on U.S. 10-year and 30-year Treasuries rose to 5.13 percent and 5.46 percent, respectively.
Analyst firm QCP Capital viewed stability in the bond market as necessary for bitcoin to rise further. It said that if broad stock-market deleveraging continues, the shock could spread to the crypto market, which could put the $80,000 support level at risk. It added that if U.S. Treasuries remain strong and real yields fall, the dollar could weaken and support risk assets.
Short-term supply and demand also increased upside resistance. Sell orders above $83,000 thickened on exchange order books, and Coinglass data showed the sell wall weighed on bitcoin's price. Over the same period, total liquidations across the crypto market were tallied at $335 million over 24 hours.
On-chain indicators also showed a slowdown in whale activity. CryptoQuant data showed Binance's whale ratio fell to 0.45 from 0.54 in early October. The indicator refers to the share of the top 10 large deposit transactions in total inflows.
As a result, the market's short-term focus is narrowing to whether bitcoin can break through resistance at $83,000 and defend support at $80,000. With stock rebounds and rising bond yields occurring at the same time, attention is on whether bitcoin will realign with broader risk-asset moves or continue to trade in a range amid an exchange sell wall and slowing whale activity.
