Stripe said on Oct. 15 it will work with stablecoin company Plasma to develop a stablecoin card that can be used to pay in multiple national currencies.
The aim is to make it easier for people and companies to spend across countries and markets. Stripe aims to let users pay directly with currencies they already hold, reducing unnecessary foreign exchange and related costs. It also aims to provide an environment where people can pay overseas as conveniently as they do at home.
Plasma, which is developing a blockchain optimized for stablecoins, is building financial accounts for those operating businesses across multiple countries. It currently supports deposits and withdrawals in multiple currencies including the U.S. dollar, euro, British pound and Brazilian real. Plasma is working with Stripe to enable customers to use their account balances through a multi-currency card.
Stripe will expand the fiat currencies and stablecoins supported by its stablecoin card infrastructure. The supported fiat currencies are the U.S. dollar, Brazilian real, euro, Mexican peso and Colombian peso. The supported stablecoins are USDC, OUSD and stablecoins that meet the requirements of the Genius Act.
This will allow someone holding euros to pay directly in euros without converting to dollars. Stripe will also offer a function that automatically selects the appropriate currency at the time of payment.
Paul Faecks (폴 펙스), Plasma's CEO, said the goal is to let people spend like locals anywhere. Henry Stern (헨리 스턴), Stripe's head of crypto and stablecoins, said it will let companies launch cards across multiple currencies and markets without building infrastructure themselves.
