[DigitalToday reporter Chi-gyu Hwang] StarkWare has launched a 'Shadow Accounts' feature on StarkNet.

The Defiant reported on Oct. 13 that the Shadow Accounts feature enables StarkNet-based apps to offer a "public-to-private switch". Users can hold decentralised finance (DeFi) positions without directly revealing their main wallet address.

Shadow accounts are not invisible accounts, but can be seen as pseudonymous accounts maintained on a per-app basis. Developer documents say token balances, call history and positions for shadow accounts remain publicly visible on-chain. Demo materials also warned that amounts and transaction times are disclosed, and activity can be linked through them.

StarkWare demonstrated shadow accounts on a live network by applying them to a STRK deposit product run by the DeFi service Vesu.

Shadow accounts are an expanded version of 'STRK20' unveiled in June. Through the Phase 1 STRK20, StarkWare introduced private balances and private transfer and swap functions on Ethereum layer2 StarkNet. It supports verifying private transactions with zero-knowledge proofs.
