Spotify, a music streaming service company, is stepping up its enterprise software business for external customers. The plan is to refine technology built for internal use and sell it to other companies.

TechCrunch reported on Oct. 8 that Spotify has also opened a technology website for enterprises and developers.

Through it, Spotify will offer solutions it developed for use on its platform, which it says has 777,000,000 monthly active users, as open-source and paid services.

Spotify open-sourced Backstage, a developer portal building platform, in 2020. Since 2023, it has sold Confidence, an enterprise software experimentation platform, and since 2024 it has sold Portal, an enterprise software development platform. Earlier this year, it also began selling a tool to manage AI coding agents.

Many technology companies build internal systems to raise development efficiency, but it is rare for companies to sell them to other businesses as Spotify does, TechCrunch said.

Tyson Singer (타이슨 싱어), Spotify's senior vice president for technology and platform, said he is asked every day why Spotify sells software. "The Spotify you know is more than a great streaming service. Behind the consumer app, hundreds of teams ship products and code every day," he said.

Singer also stressed that while AI makes it possible to build software faster, it has not made it simpler. He said complexity, costs and operational burdens are also rising.

Spotify expects development teams will keep looking for foundational tools like the ones it sells even as AI advances. Spotify said it will make those tools usable by AI agents as well.
