A customer data leak caused by external hacking has occurred at Hana Bank, following incidents at Shinhan Bank and KB Kookmin Bank. The bank identified abnormal access to its sales support system (ODS) and determined that personal information of 89 customers was leaked.

Hana Bank said on Oct. 2 that external hackers attempted abnormal access to the bank’s ODS. An investigation confirmed that information on 89 customers has been leaked so far.

The leaked information included resident registration numbers, names, addresses, email addresses, telephone numbers, mobile phone numbers and workplace names.

Hana Bank said the system is operated separately from financial transaction systems such as internet banking and mobile banking, and is therefore unrelated to any leak of customers’ financial transaction information.

Hana Bank said that immediately after recognizing a hacking attempt targeting other financial institutions on Oct. 1, it reported the matter to the Financial Supervisory Service and other relevant agencies and activated an organisation-wide emergency response system.

After detecting signs of intrusion, it urgently blocked and inspected the related IP addresses and similar systems. It has convened an emergency response task force and an incident response team, made up of the ICT group and the financial consumer protection department, to check for any additional damage.

It is individually notifying affected customers in accordance with relevant regulations and procedures. If actual damage occurs as a result of the leak, it plans to provide full compensation under relevant rules.

A Hana Bank official said, "We are taking this incident very seriously," and added, "We will work closely with relevant agencies to thoroughly identify the cause and do our utmost to establish measures to prevent recurrence."
