[DigitalToday reporter Chi-gyu Hwang (황치규)] DoorDash has launched an AI agent that lets users order food using only text messages in Apple Messages. TechCrunch reported on Sept. 30 that DoorDash is taking waitlist applications for the feature for U.S. users.
The AI agent processes orders based on a user’s existing order history when the user places an order for their usual items by text. For example, if a user sends, "Order what I usually get," it recognizes it as an order they often place on Friday nights.
Users can also specify a particular menu item or ask for recommendations for popular local restaurants. The AI agent searches nearby restaurants and suggests a cart that matches the request, and it can also send photos of recommended food by text message.
When multiple people order together, it can reflect different dietary preferences and quantities at once. DoorDash aims to differentiate itself from rival services such as Uber Eats and Grubhub with the feature.
DoorDash is also starting delivery drone tests at some restaurants in Northern California alongside the new AI agent.
