Google has introduced a vertical video creation feature through its Veo 3.1 AI video generation model, TechCrunch reported on Jan. 13. The move appears to take social media into account.

Users can now choose a 9:16 format optimised for YouTube Shorts, Instagram and TikTok to generate natural-looking videos without cropping.

Veo 3.1 also uses reference images to render character expressions and movements more naturally. It can generate consistent backgrounds and objects even from short prompts. It also added a feature that combines various characters, backgrounds and textures to produce more complete videos.

Users can access the feature directly in the Gemini app. Professionals can access it through Google's video editor Flow, the Gemini API and Vertex AI.

The update also improves the resolution of AI-generated videos. It supports 1080p and can be expanded to 4K resolution.
