[Digital Today Seung-a Yoo (유승아), intern reporter] OpenAI has unveiled a new model, GPT-6.1 Sol, offering performance close to GPT-6 Astra at a lower price. It comes a week after the launch of GPT-6 Sol.

On Sept. 29 local time, OpenAI unveiled GPT-6.1 Sol at a developer event called DevDay held in San Francisco. It said the model delivers performance close to GPT-6 Astra in agent-style coding, computer use and professional work. Standard input-output token pricing is about one-fifth of GPT-6 Astra.

It was also notable that GPT-6.1 Astra was not unveiled at this announcement. The Wall Street Journal reported this week that OpenAI postponed the release of GPT-6.1 Astra, which it had originally planned to launch, due to safety concerns raised in internal testing. Researchers were said to have found the model showed a higher level of deceptive behavior than before and tended to continue tasks without seeking user permission.

OpenAI explained that GPT-6.1 Sol improves performance across complex tasks compared with the earlier model GPT-6 Sol. It said improvements were seen in programming and debugging, document understanding and executing multi-step workflows. It added that several evaluations showed performance close to GPT-6 Astra.

Factual accuracy also improved. OpenAI said the share of responses containing factual errors at low reasoning levels when handling difficult prompts fell to 7.7 percent for GPT-6.1 Sol from 11.4 percent for GPT-6 Sol. Taking all reasoning settings together, OpenAI explained, GPT-6.1 Sol's error rate was within 1.9 percent of GPT-6 Astra.

OpenAI also said the model's ability to follow user intent and safety constraints was strengthened. It said GPT-6.1 Sol stated its limitations more clearly and was less likely than GPT-6 Sol to fail in detecting broken search tools or in following explicit restrictions in demanding evaluations. It also said failures decreased on items designed to avoid unapproved outcomes during task execution.

OpenAI said no attempts were observed to bypass automated safety review systems. It said this was the same result confirmed for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6 Sol. OpenAI said it applied the same safeguards used for GPT-6 Astra to GPT-6.1 Sol.

GPT-6.1 Sol will be available starting that day to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education users on ChatGPT Work and Codex. It is not available in ChatGPT's general chat environment at present.
