Anthropic has launched its new AI model Sonnet 5.5. CNBC reported on Sept. 28 that the release is the company’s second new model after CEO Dario Amodei called for slowing the pace of developing cutting-edge AI models.

Sonnet 5.5 is faster and cheaper than the previous version. Anthropic said performance improved over the prior model in coding, executing fixed-scope tasks, and creating documents, slides and spreadsheets.

Theo Chu, a research product manager at Anthropic, said Sonnet 5.5 is suited to execution-focused everyday tasks rather than high-level judgment.

Pricing is $2 per 1 million input tokens and $10 per 1 million output tokens. That is about half the level of Opus 5.5. Anthropic stressed that Sonnet 5.5 also reduces the number of tokens needed per task compared with the previous version, lowering operating costs.

Anthropic unveiled its high-priced model Opus 5.5 a few days ago. Anthropic also plans to release Haiku 5.5, the cheapest among its models, soon.

Sonnet 5.5 will be available on all platforms starting Sept. 28, and will also be offered on Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.
