Hangeul and Computer Foundation and Our Culture Guardians will jointly hold the “Multicultural Harmony Camp: The Joy of Being Together” from Oct. 4 to 5 at Cheongrium in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province.

The camp is the first official event hosted by the recently established Hangeul and Computer Foundation.

The company said multicultural families from seven organisations in the metropolitan area will take part, including family centres in Gangdong-gu, Gapyeong County, Guri, Anyang and Seongnam, a community children’s centre in Namyangju and the Seoul Single-Parent Family Center.

At the opening ceremony on the first day of the camp, organisers will award a total of 30 million won in scholarships to 30 teenagers from multicultural families. An MOU will then be signed between Our Culture Guardians and the Gapyeong County Family Center.

Organisers have also prepared a range of programmes to help participants from diverse cultural backgrounds mingle naturally. They include an opening performance by the Areumdeuri multicultural choir and a special lecture on K-content culture by historian Yong-hwan Shim (심용환). Group games for the whole family will follow, hosted by comedians Jun-ho Kim (김준호), Dae-hee Kim (김대희) and In-gyu Hong (홍인규). The lawn area will feature world food booths offering representative dishes from five countries, including China and Vietnam, and a traditional games experience zone.

An official from the Hangeul and Computer Foundation said it was meaningful to hold, as the foundation’s first official event, an occasion where families with different languages and cultures become one through the Korean language. The official added that, based on the philosophy of the past 30 years of protecting Hangeul through technology, the foundation will continue its warm sharing so more people, including multicultural families, can communicate and enjoy culture without language barriers.

Jeong Yun (윤정), head of the volunteer committee at Our Culture Guardians, said the sight of families from different backgrounds gathering in one place and smiling with the same light is a beautiful scene society should preserve. Yun added she hopes the two-day, one-night event will be a warm time for all participating families to feel the value of diversity.
