Coupang CEO Dae-jun Park apologised for a personal data leak.
Park said ahead of an emergency briefing at the Government Seoul Complex that he expressed regret over the incident that began on June 24. He said he sincerely apologised for causing inconvenience and concern to the public.
Coupang had said on Nov. 19 that data from 4,536 accounts had been exposed, including customer names, emails and addresses. It later found during the investigation that information from about 33.7 million accounts had been leaked.
Coupang said unauthorised access to customer data occurred from June until recently. The accessed data was limited to names, customer emails, phone numbers, delivery addresses and certain order details. It said payment information, credit card details and customer login data were not included.
Park said protecting all customer data is Coupang’s top priority. He said the company treats this obligation very seriously and maintains comprehensive data protection and security measures and processes.
Coupang plans to work with a joint public-private investigation team composed of the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Personal Information Protection Commission, the Korea Internet and Security Agency and the National Police Agency to prevent further damage. It is reviewing changes to its existing data security systems to better protect customer data.
Park again apologised for causing concern and said Coupang will continue to prioritise customer data safety and security.
