[Digital Today reporter Jinju Hong] Bose has unveiled two new clip-on open earbuds that do not block the ears. It is releasing a second-generation model with enhanced performance for its main product and an entry-level model tailored for sports at the same time, stepping up its push into the open-earbuds market.

On Sept. 17 local time, major foreign media outlets including The Verge reported that Bose unveiled the "Ultra Open Earbuds second generation" and the "Sport Open Earbuds".

The Ultra Open Earbuds second generation keeps the clip-on design of the existing product while improving sound quality and battery performance. It will start taking pre-orders on Sept. 19 at $299 and will be officially released on Oct. 1. It comes in five colors: black, white smoke, cherry chocolate, olive green and sky pink.

The earbuds hang on the outside of the ear rather than being inserted into the ear canal. Transducers deliver sound toward the ear canal and are designed to allow natural hearing of surrounding sounds. As a result, they do not include active noise cancelling (ANC) that blocks outside noise.

Changes were also made to the exterior. The metal cap on each earbud has a diagonal finish, and Bose said it uses a new driver to deliver higher volume and deeper bass. It also adds a function that automatically adjusts volume to match the surrounding environment.

A newly added "Cinema Mode" also stands out. It is designed to create a wider, more immersive soundstage based on Bose TrueSpace technology while keeping dialogue in videos clear in the center.

Battery performance has also improved. The earbuds can play for up to 9 hours on their own, 2 hours longer than the previous model's maximum of 7 hours. With the charging case, users can get an additional 19.5 hours. The redesigned charging case has been changed so it can stand upright on a wireless charging pad.

The Sport Open Earbuds unveiled alongside it emphasize stable fit during exercise. The price is $199, $100 cheaper than the Ultra Open Earbuds second generation. It uses the same open structure that hangs on the ear, but applies a thinner cuff and a soft matte silicone finish to increase friction with the ear.

Bose said it was designed to keep the earbuds securely in place even in situations with lots of movement, such as shaking the head or running.

The sports model also applies a function that adjusts playback volume to match ambient noise. The approach is to adjust volume so users do not miss the music or content they are listening to even if surrounding noise rises during exercise.

A custom shortcut button located on the outside of the earbud has a separate texture. This is meant to make it easy to find the button position by touch without looking at a screen or checking the earbud directly during exercise. Battery life is up to 7 hours on the earbuds alone. With the wireless charging case, users can get up to 22 additional hours.

The two products fall into the same open-earbuds category but are differentiated by use case. The Ultra Open Earbuds second generation is a premium model that strengthens sound quality, immersion and battery performance, while the Sport Open Earbuds is designed for exercise, emphasizing fit stability and ease of control.

Bose's strategy with the two products is to split its open-earbuds lineup into premium and sports products, targeting consumers who want to listen to music and surrounding sounds at the same time without blocking their ears. Sales for both start on Sept. 19, and both will be released on Oct. 1.
