OpenAI is testing an ad-based agent feature inside ChatGPT with some U.S. advertisers, The Information reported on Sept. 16.
The report said ChatGPT users can click an ad and start a conversation with an AI agent to ask additional questions about a product or service.
In a blog post, OpenAI said this conversation runs separately from a user’s existing ChatGPT chat.
OpenAI is also rolling out AI tools for advertisers. Advertisers can manage campaigns by entering prompts into the Ads Manager dashboard unveiled in May. OpenAI also writes ad copy and images. With advertiser consent, OpenAI rewrites ad titles to match topics discussed during chats and translates them into the language a user uses.
Google and Meta have sold creative ad tools since 2023. Meta launched an AI tool in June that handles customer chats on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. Google announced a chatbot in July that appears in search ads and lets shopping users chat in real time with an advertiser’s website.
