OpenAI has temporarily halted new subscriptions to its $200-a-month Pro plan due to a sharp rise in demand for its latest AI model, Astra. TechCrunch reported on Sept. 10 that OpenAI is stopping sign-ups starting with the Pro plan, which carries the biggest system load, as infrastructure pressure grows.
Thibault Sottiaux (티보 소티오), who oversees key products such as Codex and ChatGPT at OpenAI, said on social media platform X (Twitter) that the company chose the smallest measure to keep access for existing users as much as possible.
OpenAI did not disclose how long the pause in new Pro sign-ups will last or provide figures that could indicate the scale of demand, such as daily sign-up numbers.
Astra was released on Sept. 3 and is being rolled out sequentially to Pro, Plus, Enterprise and Business accounts.
