Amazon Web Services (AWS) said on Wednesday it is expanding “Kiro Students”, a programme that allows university students to use its AI-based development tool Kiro for free for 1 year.

AWS first introduced Kiro Students in March for 11 universities in two countries. It is now expanding the programme to 121 new universities in 16 countries. That brings the total to 132 universities in 18 countries.

The company said Kiro Students helps university students turn ideas into real projects using AI-based development tools and experience development methods using AI agents.

In South Korea, Seoul National University, Yonsei University and Kookmin University were newly selected for the programme. All enrolled students at those universities can use the Kiro Pro plan for free for 12 months. Kiro Pro is a paid plan that provides 1,000 credits per month and offers benefits worth $240 per year.

Students can create a Kiro account using their university email address or link a university email address to an existing account. They must then check eligibility information on the account page and verify through SheerID, a student verification service.

Through Kiro Crew, provided as open source, students can configure tools and agents to match their way of working. They can run background tasks such as sending a reminder each morning about unanswered emails or pulling the latest changes to a project before class. In hackathons, they can also set it up to run multiple feature development tasks in parallel.
