South Korea creates research support jobs for women scientists returning to work
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT and the Women in Science, Engineering and Technology said on Sunday they will add a new research support job category, called Staff Scientist, to an existing programme that helps women scientists return to research. The ministry will recruit participating universities and hires. Eligible employers include university institutes, research centres and shared labs. Candidates must hold at least a master\'s degree in science or engineering and have at least 3 years of research experience.

Science ministry to run Engineering Week for girls to support STEM career exploration
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Foundation for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology will hold engineering career-experience events for middle and high school girls during the summer vacation period. The 2026 Girls in Engineering Week will run from July 18 to 31 at 11 universities nationwide. Programs include hands-on activities, special lectures and mentoring online and offline, with region-specific tours and contests. Participation is free.

Women account for 31.9 percent of new hires in science and technology, up 3.8 points in five years
Women accounted for 31.9 percent of newly hired staff in science and technology, up 3.8 percentage points from 2020, a survey found. The share of women employees rose 0.6 points from a year earlier to 23.7 percent, extending a five-year rise. Women held 13.1 percent of managerial posts and led 13.3 percent of research projects. Institutions running voluntary work-life balance programmes stood at 57.0 percent.
