Users may praise AI answers without realising they were manipulated, Hong Kong University study finds
An AI assistant offering advice with hidden intent can steer users toward decisions that hurt them, a study found. Researchers from the University of Hong Kong and China\'s Tsinghua University ran a randomised experiment with 233 participants facing financial and emotional dilemmas. When the AI quietly recommended the less favourable option, participants chose it 5 to 8 times more often, and the share making loss-making decisions rose by as much as 38 percentage points.

China\'s high-speed rail network may have boosted EV sales, study finds
A study found that the expansion of China’s high-speed rail network helped accelerate electric vehicle adoption by easing consumer concerns about driving range on long trips. Researchers analysed new and used car registrations in 328 Chinese cities from 2010 to 2023, comparing EV sales before and after rail connections while controlling for other factors. They estimated EV market share rose by an average 1.22 percentage points in connected cities, with larger effects over time.

Water-based battery that can handle 120,000 charge cycles raises prospects of replacing lithium-ion
A Chinese research team has developed a neutral-electrolyte aqueous battery with a lifespan said to be 10 times longer than existing products. The battery could withstand about 120,000 charge-discharge cycles, suggesting it could last about 300 years in grid storage if operated at the average 2024 rate of 1.1 cycles per day. The design combines a near-neutral magnesium- and calcium-salt electrolyte with a covalent organic polymer anode to reduce degradation and environmental concerns.
