SMRs emerge as 24-7 power option for semiconductor fabs
Small modular reactors (SMRs) are emerging as a power alternative for semiconductor clusters as electricity demand rises with new fabs while the government reduces coal and LNG generation. Industry is reviewing building SMRs near chip plants because they can provide steady 24-hour output. Power supply is urgently needed for new clusters in Yongin and the southwest, but domestic SMR deployment is expected to lag fab completion. Licensing and planning timelines remain uncertain.

SMR vs fusion vs renewables: three-way race for future power, who takes energy throne by 2035
Rising electricity demand driven by the spread of artificial intelligence is reshaping the global energy market and intensifying competition over power infrastructure. With gas turbine supply shortages expected to persist and geopolitical risks adding uncertainty, technology companies are exploring alternatives such as small modular reactors and nuclear fusion. Developers including Kairos Power, Oklo, Commonwealth Fusion Systems and Helion are pursuing demonstration and commercial timelines, while renewables and grid batteries gain cost competitiveness.

TerraPower wins U.S. approval for commercial SMR construction, first new reactor permit in 10 years
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved construction of a TerraPower small modular reactor, SK Innovation said on Wednesday. It was the first time in 10 years that the NRC has permitted construction of a new commercial nuclear power plant, and the first U.S. approval for an advanced reactor such as an SMR. TerraPower will begin building what it called the world’s first commercial SMR plant in Wyoming and aims to start operating a demonstration reactor in 2030.
