Synthetic biology promotion act takes effect, launching full-lifecycle support system
South Korea has put into force a law designed to systematically foster synthetic biology, the Ministry of Science and ICT said on April 23. The law sets rules for promoting research and development and for safety management, including five-year basic plans and annual implementation plans. It also allows the designation of R&D hub institutions and the establishment of a public biofoundry, with procedures, fees and emergency provisions. The act also provides a basis for joint use of research data.

South Korea science ministry selects 35 teams for 2026 synthetic biology competition finals
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT said on Tuesday it has completed the first round of judging for the 2026 synthetic biology competition and confirmed 35 teams for the finals. A total of 104 teams from 37 universities and government-funded research institutes applied. The finalists include 20 undergraduate teams and 15 graduate teams. The ministry will provide initial research funds and expert mentoring, and support participation in iGEM international competitions.

MSIT holds bio academies future policy forum
South Korea\'s Ministry of Science and ICT held the MSIT-Bio Academies Future Policy Forum on Tuesday in Sejong with the Korean Society for Molecular and Cellular Biology, the Korean Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the National Research Foundation of Korea and the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology. Participants introduced recent research trends, highlighted the spread of AI in biotech, shared details of national project planning and discussed expanding a bio policy platform for regular communication with policymakers.
