Tech Insight: Stripe\'s Metronome acquisition shows pitfalls of software architecture
Stripe, a major B2B payments company, acquired real-time usage metering and billing startup Metronome for about $1 billion in January 2026. Lago CEO Anh-Tho Chuong said buying can be cheaper than rebuilding software architecture after early design choices become costly to change. He said Stripe Billing was built for SaaS subscriptions and assumes monthly or annual cycles, making real-time billing needs difficult. He cited OpenAI and other AI-driven services as examples.
