GitHub overhauls repository architecture after surge in AI agent traffic
GitHub is rebuilding its Git repository architecture from scratch to cope with a surge in traffic driven by AI agents, The Register reported. In internal tests, the new structure improved write performance by 35 times. GitHub plans to keep developers’ workflows, code reviews and security settings unchanged while replacing only the internal structure, without giving a migration timeline. Monthly events rose from 218.2 billion to 473.3 billion between September 2025 and August 2026, and commits hit 7.38 billion in September, five times year-earlier levels.
