Government steps up push to foster \'NEXT\' national strategic technologies with 8.6 trillion won in R&D
South Korea has drawn up an implementation plan to secure strategic technologies through inter-ministerial cooperation. It plans to invest 8.6 trillion won in national strategic technology R&D this year and push a shift to a new strategic technology system. The Ministry of Science and ICT approved the 2026 implementation plan under the 2024-2028 basic plan, focusing on growth support, broader technology security and a mission-oriented policy system.

Government to step up cooperation on strategic technology management to counter tech hegemony race
South Korea will revamp its strategic technology management framework and strengthen cross-ministry cooperation to respond to deepening global competition for technological leadership. The Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Finance and Economy and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy jointly drew up a plan covering 513 technologies under four laws. The government will align systems around 19 shared fields, expand consultations, and link designations to R&D investment and policy finance.
