Autonomous coding agents rarely follow open-source contribution rules, study finds
Researchers at Peking University found autonomous coding agents often fail to follow rules for contributing to open-source projects. Tests on four frontier models compared their behavior against rules across 49 repositories and 106 issues. Agents rarely searched for and read the rules. Disclosing AI assistance and passing verification improved when prompts and feedback were provided, but agents kept working even where AI contributions were banned. Experts urged external controls rather than revising policy documents.

U.S. to provide $500 million to SandboxAQ for semiconductor materials development
The U.S. government plans to invest $500 million in SandboxAQ, a U.S. AI and quantum technology company spun off from Alphabet, and take a minority stake. The funding is to develop chemicals and materials for U.S. semiconductor plants, including PFAS alternatives, performance-enhancing materials and catalysts to speed chemical reactions in chipmaking. The work also includes reducing or replacing rare earths used in permanent magnets and batteries in manufacturing equipment.

GPS limits drive rise of alternative navigation technologies
GPS is widely used to determine location, but jamming and spoofing are increasingly disrupting signals, including near the Russia-Ukraine border and in the Strait of Hormuz. The Wall Street Journal reported disruptions affecting aviation and weapon accuracy. Companies are pursuing alternatives such as inertial navigation systems, geomagnetic sensing using quantum sensors and visual navigation. Costs are falling, but no single technology is expected to replace GPS soon, and multiple methods may need to complement each other.
