SMR special act, enforcement decree take effect; public-private commercialisation begins

South Korea has put in place an institutional framework to support small modular reactor (SMR) development from research and development through demonstration and commercialisation at the government-wide level. The Ministry of Science and ICT said the SMR special act and its enforcement decree take effect from Sept. 11. The law sets out support for R&D and demonstration and aims to link outcomes to commercialisation and industry. A public-private committee and planning system will be established, along with support for private-led projects and R&D zones.

SMR special act passes National Assembly, master plan to be set every five years

South Korea has established a legal basis to systematically support small modular reactor (SMR) development after a special act passed a National Assembly plenary session on Feb. 12, the Ministry of Science and ICT said. The law mandates a master plan every five years and creates a promotion committee under the Nuclear Energy Promotion Commission. It also allows designation of R&D zones and includes provisions for training specialists and pursuing international cooperation.
